Ive recently changed to Sky broadband and the router they provide doesnt offer the same range as my previous one so I was wondering a) if there were any settings that coudl be tweaked to improve the range or b) can I do anything with a Draytek AP700 wireless access point that I have spare?

I wasnt sure if the Draytek can extend the signal somehow or if it would be worth just plugging the Draytek into the Sky router and seeing if that offers a better signal upstairs.

Sadly there is no hard wires to anywhere in the house running back to the router.

Powerline networking to somewhere upstairs where you can then use the Draytek as a repeater?

I would configure the Draytek as a wireless access point, give it the same SSID as the Sky router but different channels which don't overlap, say 3 and 9. :D

Edit.
Powerline to upstairs as suggested by Mark M

Thanks for the advice, I'll pick up a couple of powerlines and plug the Draytek in upstairs. Is it possible to use the same SSID on the Draytek as the sky so that I dont have to connect to a new network if I walk up stairs or take my laptop downstairs.

Thanks again.

Roaming access points should be ok. Make sure you turn off (disable) DHCP on the access point.

Let us know hown you get on. :D
