Extended displays

Just about to order a hidef telly and was just wondering if it would be possible to output to the telly as an extended desktop on my single Geforce 6800GT 256meg graphics card?

The telly has DVI and HDMI connections, and currently my monitor only uses the VGA output. Would I be able to keep my monitor on the VGA connection and extend my desktop onto the telly using the DVI connector?

Would be cool and very handy as they'd almost be sitting side by side. Cheers!

in a word yes... wont be able to play games and video across the 2, but extend the desktop and drag windows etc... then sure you can.

Excellent, thanks. The dragging windows thing is all I really want, just to be able to move videos across and play them on the big screen whilst the PC is running. I wouldn't expect my 6800gt to cope with 2 displays in a game so thats cool.

Displaying a video is whats called using an "overlay" and this in previous generation cards can only be done on the Primary monitor

I am not necessarily saying your card has this restriction but be advised just incase it doesnt work

This can also affect the dvd playing software you use - especially if its PowerDVD or somesuch

I use a 6600GT for dual displays in an HTPC and either display can use overlay or renderless mode, I'd assume a 6800GT is the same?. Some players e.g. Theatertek have the option of Mon1/2. Some open on the primary monitor and have to be moved across.

ok fair enough I wasnt sure, and yes if a 6600 can do something then a 6800 surely can ( unless of course the 6600 came out a little later with a more defined GPU, but I doubt this is the case)
