Extended warranty - Would you bother?

Hey all,

Quick question if you don't mind! Warranty is due to run out on my mothers 2.2 2008 Civic (Honda happiness) and has two days left. They've called today to offer her one final time the extended warranty.

Would you bother? Cost is £399 for the year with breakdown cover?

Thanks :)

Yes I would, I have found having a warrant has saved my ass a few time. I had around £20+k worth of work done under warranty on one of my cars and £10k on another.

People are getting a bit carried away here.

The Honda used car warranty is not the same as extending the initial 3 year warranty out, and from memory doesn't cover very much. Have a thorough read through first

The diesels like to eat a clutch ( which probably won't be covered)

Can need the egr cleaned out / replaced if it gets too bad - though fairly unlikely ( also unlikely to be covered)

Other than that turbo is the only other thing that would be reasonably likely to go and cost a lot, even then a refurbed unit is £500

A lot of clutches seem to get covered on warranty. Even on the extended ones.

Honda seem to pay out for the clutch up to 7 years provided its pressure plate fault and not owner error.

The general consensus here is to self insure? It would save a packet not having to get it serviced at Honda if not taking their extended warranty.

The guy who made the point above about it not being the same is indeed correct. It doesn't cover that many things and excludes wear and tear (Honda removed this option from the used car warranty extension).

IMHO insurance is to cover things that you would not be able to find the money for. On average it will always cost more than the things it covers. Thus unless you expect something to go wrong or can not afford anything more than £400 to go wrong I would avoid insurance.

If it was the BMW one the OP would be getting a slap for even having to ask.

I don't know about how good other manufacturer insured warranties are.

I took out the official Skoda one on my previous car as it seemed really good value. So OK they weren't covering "wear & tear" items, but that was to be expected.
The breakdown cover alone (Home, Relay, Onwards Travel, Full European) was worth a fair amount.

It depends.

The BMW insurance for our car is £30 a month for the top level cover.

That gives us recovery, replacement car, and will fix any mechanical problems not related to wear and tear items with an excess of £250.

The car has not gone wrong, but its nice to know that were we to be caught in a situation like the unfortunate gentleman with the X6 that detonated 5 minutes after leaving the dealer, one phone call later I get a replacement car and the entire thing taken of with no effort at all on my part.

Which is why you take insurance out, I mean, your house stands a very small chance of burning down, but you take out insurance just in case, my car isnt likely to trash its engine, destroy its gearbox or some other nastiness, but if it does I dont care, BMW will sort it out.

Nobody 'expects' things to go wrong, that's the whole point of being insured..

Clear as mud here gents ;) I popped down to try and look at a policy document today but they don't have one at the dealership where it came from! :/

Be nice to know what it actually covers!

Well most people can't just afford to replace a house. But I wouldnt pay for extended warranty on a car if I could simply afford to replace any parts. As personally i would prefer to take the risk as the odds would be in my favor. Like I said it comes down to what you can afford and your risk appetite.

She intends to get rid of the car within the next six months. Its quite a gamble to take but I wonder if its worth the risk!

Edit : £299 at a dealer up country. Price difference for no gain!
