Need an extender. Ideally would like a longer lens. As this request is for birds

Was out yesterday and really needed more than 200mm

From what I gather I can only really get away with 1.4x

So I need anything more than Canon 1.4x II?
The iii seems too much

For birds the longer the better.

1.4x will help, but 280mm is still short for birds.

I find 400mm short for birds a lot of the time :)

2x might be better but I'm not sure how badly this affects auto focus and sharpness.
As your likely to be cropping at 400mm loss of sharpness might make the 2x pointless.

For birds you want to see if you can save up for either Tamron or sigma 150-600mm

The canon could take the 2.0 TC OK buts it's still too short for birds.i would put the money into a longer lens instead.

Thinking of selling everything and getting a long lens only

Sigma art 35mm
70-200mm MK ii is
Canon 60d

And seeing what to get then.

Since having my phone (s7edge) I have barely touched any kit. And only use my 70-200mm for birds!

Yep I'm going to sell the following. I don't need them.
- canon 70-200mm 2.8 is mk2
-sigma 50mm 1.4 art
-canon 60D

So I dunno what to get. I'm willing to spend another 1k on top of this but I still don't think that will get me anything amazing.

Only options I can see is canon 100-400mm mk2
Or one of the tamron/sigma super zooms

Basically I think I'm willing to go near 3k. If it's worth it. If not then save some money!

Had a look. The Canon 500mm f4.5 ls. Might be in range

D.P has already mentioned it, but why not go for the Sigma 150-600mm F5-6.3 DG OS HSM Sport, which at the moment with a bundled 1.4 teleconverter is around the £1400 mark - an absolute steal at the price.

If you want to see what that lens is capable of, take a look at

A couple that I follow on Flickr, called Jeff and Jan Cohen, active around the North Wales/Wirral area, also use this lovely lens and they've got some cracking shots

People get a bit panicky about the f/6.3 part of the lens I think. With todays sensors being a lot better even up to high ISO, stuff like grain reduction within Lightroom and hopefully some decent light, you'll get good results.

dont discredit the canon or sigmas in similar ranges pal

I've read (may or may not be right) the Canon 100-400mm ii + 1.4x is better than the tamron.

This would be used for wildlife/birds almost entirely. (anything in the normal range I just do with my phone and lens kit)

Not sure about sigma

Just be careful using the Canon 100-400 (Mark I or Mark II) with the Canon 1.4x Extender. Not all Canon bodies support autofocus when the maximum aperture is f8.

In fact if I read one of your earlier posts correctly you have a Canon 60D? If that's the case according to the article below it does not support Autofocus with the above lens/extender.

You can check the following article out for more info

Yeah I did read that. I have a 60d and a 70d and would probably trade up to a 80d (which can I believe hold at f8) - and f8 is also not ideal

Nice pic. It's going to be hard to choose as flight birds need (more so than ever) the fast aperture to help with the iso too.

And then I look the 500mm Canon mk1 is quite heavy. It's a shame there isn't something that is cheap (relatively lol) , good, prime and long ish

id still give one of the tamron or sigmas a try seen used mint condition ones for circa 500 a friend of mine who is into wildlife uses one and rates it highly and he has a 100-400 canon and think he has a huge canon aswell

That's about the same sharpness I get from my Sigma 150-600. It's ok, and I guess for the price it's reasonable, but it's not great compared to a decent prime or some 2.8/4 glass, which may just be in range for the OP. The problem is when getting to that f stop you need to consider weight as well. Are you happy carrying round 3+kg of lens when out and about or would you prefer something lighter and smaller?

If you want something electively cheap, good, long (ish) and a prime then considered the Canon 400 f/5.6. That said it doesn't have IS and it's getting pretty old now, but should still beat most newer consumer/prosumer zooms.

I've been looking at the p900 that I've never heard of before and seen some amazing shots from it. It's obviously also super light. I may go for that and ditch the dslr completely!

Or at least try it.

It would save be 2k

Yeah I I'm pretty fussy worth sharpness but also always concerned about weight. I had the sigma 120—300 and sold it because almost all of the pictures were not sharp enough for me. It was also heavy, but heavy i mean not physically but I get so warm is not pleasant in a hot day for anyone I may be with!.. Sweat!

I wonder if no lens really fits except a mid aperture prime.
