Extending displays...

I'd like to extend my laptop monitor to my main computer monitor. I bought a mini-displayport to displayport cable, to connect my laptop to my monitor. I've plugged that in now.

My main computer monitor is connected via DVI to my tower. Which is switched on.

What i'd like to be able to do is switch my laptop on and for the screen to extend immediately i.e. take priority over my tower, on the monitor. And if i switch off my laptop (or remove the mini-displayport) the monitor display will revert to my tower.

Can I do this?

thanks very much.

All depends on the monitor. Most require you to select the source when two are active, but when only one is active it will switch to that one

If you have your desktop such that the screen sleeps, then in that state the laptop will become the only active display

thanks for the response.

The first time i plugged it in, the screen duplicated from my laptop to the monitor.

I then went into the settings to "extend" instead, hit apply and the monitor returned to my tower display. I couldnt recreate the duplication or extend the laptop display so that it happened automatically (though I can using the monitor buttons to switch obviously).

By the way I have a Dell U2412M

When you set up extended display on your laptop it should remember this so when you move back to a single display and then back to dual it will have retained the extended settings and you will not need to set this up again.

As for your laptop taking priority over the display will depend on the display and the port being used and if you pc is active or in sleep mode.
