I've got a socket to move in the garage.

What is the best junction box type product to use?

There are just 2x 3 core 2.5mm cables to join together.

I have some of these lying around https://www.screwfix.com/p/debox-in-line-connector-box/8692h but they don't seem very robust.

I also have some of these https://www.screwfix.com/p/30a-3-terminal-heavy-duty-junction-box-black/7552d which the electrician's left behind when I had some work done, but I'm not sure what they're rated to - Part number Click SW8J20W

If either of these are no good, what would be more suitable?

Does the old socket actually need to be removed or could you leave it where it is and add another?

Following from the reply above, if the original socket is on it's own circuit (and not already spurred off another socket) then it is perfectly acceptable to spur a double socket from it. Just take some more T&E from the terminals in the socket (so there'll be 3 sets in total in that socket) and run it to your new socket position. No junction box needed.
