Extending speaker cables on Sony BDV-E370

Hi all.

I recently bought a Sony BDV-E370. After deciding on a room layout it appears the wires for one of the front and one of the rear speakers are too short. The cable has a terminal on one end which plugs into the player itself, the other end is bare cable that attaches to the speaker. One cable needs about a 1m extension, the other needs 2.5m.

After a bit of reading it looks like there are two options:

- Buy a whole new cable with the same terminal on the end that is just a bit longer
- Buy some speaker cable and add a join on the bare wire end

Now as long as it isn't too pricey I'd prefer the first option, but I can't seem to find said cable anywhere online. Nothing even close. So it looks like I may be stuck with the second option.

I thought this would be straightforward as it looks like all I need is some wire, insulation tape, and a bit of soldering if I want to be extra secure. However I'm not sure what type of speaker cable I need, there seems to be all sorts of thickness/grades available. How do I know what type I need? As long as it works, preferably black, and is roughly the same thickness then I'll be happy!

Would something like this be ok?

Thanks for any help

Hi, looking at your amp it uses proprietary plugs on the socketed end of those cable runs which is probably why you havn't been able to find any longer ones with plugs ready attached.

Soldering an extra length of cable to each would be a good solution as you don't have to mess with the plug. Granted it probably won't look too pretty when you absolutely annihilate the finished job with electrical tape for insulation, but I guess you can bear it?

The cable grades do seem quite confusing, but the way it works is the longer the cable run, you should use a bigger diameter cable - smaller AWG number. For cable runs under 15m I would use guage 16 wire.

There is no need to get "exotic" branded cables, especially when for the same price you can get a basic copper speaker cable of larger diameter. Speaker cables need not be shielded as the signal level is relatively high :)

Hope this helps, I would have liked to link you to a recommended cable but competitor rules etc. etc. :)

Just in case you were thinking of just twisting the cable ends together I can't recommend that, definitely put a soldering iron to it! You can find AWG to mm conversion tables too, if there is speaker wire you want to buy but its thickness is given in mm.

What is the connector? What type of wire/cable is it?
I've no idea I'm afraid, which is kind of why I posted. I looked on the manufacturing specs on the Sony website but couldn't see anything.

Thanks for your help rarryawn. I'm not too fussed about appearance. I'd like it to be black but I should be able to hide the join so that's not too much of a problem.

Any chance you could post up the name of the cable so I could search for it rather than give the name/link to the supplier, or even email it in trust. Hope this is ok with the men up top. They don't stock speaker cables so hopefully this isn't a problem.

I've seen a few cables that I think might fit the bill, but they come in huge lengths, I only need a few metres!

personally i'd just twist the cable wire together with some new speaker cable but im sure there is some reason thats a bad idea.

Only real downside is conection reliability a decently twisted pair of wires tapped should work fine but will be prone to being pulled apart if accidentally loaded. Someone will also come and mention the better elctrical conection from a solid solder joing which is true but probably not significant in an installation like this.

Personally I'd solder it's a two minute job and will last years or if it was out of site and I was feeling lazy a bit of choc block would do the trick.

I know this is a case of "holy thread revival Batman" but I wondered how you got on with this? I have the exact same situation and am scared to butcher my cables.
