Hey folks, I'm trying to advise a friend about extending the wireless connectivity around his new house but I'm not all that up on current tech...

There is a bog standard Virgin router and an old Apple AE running the show but the house is big and old (read: thick-ass walls) so ideally need to ethernet to some access points?

Could you recommend good high-end-consumer access points that he could use and whether or not the router should be replaced? Just hearing about this 802.11ac stuff is that worth factoring in?

Usage wise, nothing our of the ordinary - iPads, Netflix simultaneously by 2/3 family members blah blah blah

Any advise?

I could find a thousand products which technically do the job but I am looking for recommendations for tried and tested bits of kit...

(Is the power-line data idea really a good solution? I've always assumed it would be hit and miss and noisy as hell?)

Is there a specific brand which is rock solid? Is there an access point which gets recommended time and time again to do the job well?

powerline adapters are probably the quickest and easiest
I have some cheap tplink 500 ones that work well for streaming video around an old (1800's) house

Power line adopters with built in access points work a treat in my 1600s house. They're TP link branded 500mbps items. Achieve no where near that speed but fast enough for me to watch 1080p video anywhere in the house from my Plex server.
