Extending wifi coverage

Hi, I have a Linksys EA6900 - Wireless AC1900 Smart Cable Router down stairs in my house and a Linksys RE6500 AC Wireless Range Extender upstairs, but my wifi performance is still pretty bad.

Particularly when trying to stream audio to my bose soundlink or airplay devices.

I read somewhere that wireless range extenders can actually reduce network bandwidth if they are connected to the router via wifi rather than a cable.

Will I get an improvement if I connect the range extender to the router via a cat5 cable? Will I need to put the extender in a different mode or anything?

Also when trying to boost wifi coverage in this way, can I use any wireless access point with the DHCP turned off, and with the same SSID as the main router? I am just thinking connect up some old routers via cat5 with the SSID set the same.

Cheers for your help
Amit
