Hi there, I have a spare wireless access point that I want to use to extend my wireless range. Now I know i could use WDS etc but I don’t want the decrease in bandwidth and I can easily get a network cable to it.

However I also don’t want to have to mess about with 2 SSIDs so what’s the best way to get these access points to work together? Just set the SSID/WPA key the same and leave them to it?

They are both Linksys units, one with tomato and the other with DD-WRT.

Thanks

If you keep the SSID the same and the same WPA key then in theory you should be able to roam from one to the other though I suspect you will suffer a short drop while authentication and DHCP happens. Though in practice I suspect you'll just be connecting to whichever one is strongest signal and sticking with it. This should work for both. Though to avoid potential confusion I'd turn off SSID broadcast on them.
