Extending wireless range

I'm currently staying at my Dad's house but the room I'm in is out of range of the wireless router. I have tried powerline adapters but it appears that the room is on a different ring to the rest of the house as well so no joy.

Anyway, I'm thinking about using the powerline adapters to connect a wireless access point to the network and will position it as close as I can to my room to get the best signal.

The two access points I'm looking at are these:-

Obviousley the Netgear looks the better of the two, but money is a little tight at the minute so I don't want to spend any more than I have to. If the Edimax isn't up to the job though then I will splash out the extra.

Anyone have any experience doing something similar or have any advice?

i was under the impression the the homeplug power things do work on differernt rings as long as they go through the same switch box.. ?

That is certainly what I have found, in fact I'm connected through such a set up at the moment :)

If it were me i would just buy a wireless netgear router with access point and bridging capabilites for about the same price, you then have also have the a router if you ever may need it.

Daft suggestion, but is your mb ethernet port enabled in the BIOS? It took me a little while to figure that one out, embarrassingly :o Works fine now, and through an RCD! lol

hey all

i,m also interested in this as i want to expand my connection throughout the whole house.

its 3 floors and the using the wallk socket option isnt practical so its got to be wirless thoughout the house?

best suggestions please

Wireless is an option. But, you will get flaky performance.

What i've just done in my dads place is to run ethernet to each floor, with the router at the master socket. I've put two cables to each floor for redundancy as they can 'go'.

At each floor I've put a switch, and I've ran 2 leads to each room. Wireless on the ground floor where his living room is.

Works a treat and there is only two places where you can see the wires. I just tucked the cable behind the boards lining the stairs.

This may be a daft question but can you not run an extension power cable from the nearest room where the powerline adapters work to your room, then plug a powerline adapters into the extension cable ?
