Hey guys.

I'm looking to buy some coloured extension cables for my new build and I wanted to check with you guys if there are any hazards or pitfalls with various brands?

There are many different brands that make these, some well known and some I've never heard of before. Do I need to purchase ones designed specifically for my PSU? Or are they fairly universal?

I found some Phanteks and BitFenix cables in a red colour here on OcUK, but I'm also looking for purple too OcUK don't have but a certain rainforest place do but in brands I've never heard of so I'm wary.

I think I can get away with just the red for now but just want to double check about the brand compatibility. Defo don't want to risk frying my new build coz I cheaped out on a cable!

You only need to buy cables designed specially for your PSU if are replacing the existing cables (Cable kits) that plug into the PSU itself.
I don't think you'll have an issue with PSU cable extensions provided you stick with the brands you recognize. Cablemods is the most recognised out there so if you are in any doubt buy theirs.

Brilliant thank you! I can see OcUK have the Cablemods brand in red and also red/black in stock which will do just nicely

I just went through this and bought replacement cables. They are very expensive, but there you go. I have seen companies using extension cables but the pitfalls would worry me. Corsair cables for example actually contain components ( capacitors ) and I would be concerned about extending cables without knowing exactly what the ramifications are.
