i got given a western digital mybook 500gb for my birthday

i have been using it with my pc for music/video backups

i noticed it was formatted as FAT rather than NTFS

does this mean i can plug it into my ps3

how would i need to go about it?

PS3's only work with FAT32 formatted drives, so it should work fine. It should be just a matter of connecting it to one of the USB ports, thats all i have ever needed to do (apart from connecting the HDD upto the mains lol).

As above, just make some folders on your drive - VIDEO, PICTURE and MUSIC (in CAPS) and then put the appropriate files in there so that they show up in the XMB right away.

I did that with a external 160GB drive and it works fine, disadvantage is that you cannot create folders, move files, change filenames or make thumbnails, basically you can read only.

Quite right. I prefer to copy all my videos on to the PS3's internal HDD to overcome those problems - I have nearly filled up 250GB with tat. Then I use my external 250GB to backup the PS3's internal drive so that thumbnails and album properties are preserved and can be restored.
