external dvd burner on a macbook

quick one can any one tell me if i can use a external dvd burner on my macbook that only has a combo drive (cdrw /dvdrom) i have been told they are not recognised , by i dvd please help also any recommened drives for burning dvd`s plextor are ment to be good

My iMac has had no trouble recognizing and using my Sony external optical drive. I can't say about Plextors in particular.

hmm i'm intrested in this as I may get *** baby one and save £ and use my external DVDRW , as I dont burn that often and won't burn on the move .
