Hey guys,

I am building a new machine next week and was wondering what I would need to do in bios for the motherboard to recognize a bootable windows disk in an external USB Dvd drive.

As im sure it wont just plug and play if the whole system is brand new do I need to go into bios and add it to the bootables list? or something like that?

Can you explain the same for a Solid state as im goin to only have a solid state drive as my main HD. Im sure I will have to change something in bios for that too?

In my BIOS there are 2 types of boot option, one is for HDD's installed and the other is for USB devices plugged in.
To test this I also plugged in a USB stick and it showed up as a bootable device in the BIOS.
Solid State means (AFAIK) no moving parts:

When installing this in the BIOS it is recommended to use the AHCI option rather then IDE for greater speed and efficiency.

So just set the boot option for usb devices? hmm. Can anyone else give another opinoin?

Thanks for the info on the solid state by the way. Im getting an external so still curious about that for installing windows and if the computer will recognise it as a boot device when i plug it in when the machines never been used before.
