Hi,

Anyone got any suggestions for a fully external fan controller that I can use for my AV cabinet? I've got 4 fans installed in it, and ideally would like them to come on and change speed depending on either temperature or manual control.

Ideally I would like it to be fairly discreet, it is unlikely to be on show but will need to be in easy reach if it has manual control.

Seems like pretty much every fan controller around is designed to fit in a 5.25" bay, which makes sense I guess. :(

Thanks in advance.

If you want simple on/off based on temperature, then Maplin do a small kit (about £8) which is a temperature controlled switch. This isn't much bigger than 2 matchboxes stacked on top of each other, so could be hidden away anywhere.

On/off would work I guess. I was kinda hoping for a solution that would be fully autonomous and adapt the speed based on the temperature. :)

Look up "thermistor dc fan" on Google. You'll find lots of solutions. Choose the appropriate components and you be able to decide the noise level, air flow and temperature range.

What do you use to power the fans and which fans are you using? My ps3 is getting really hot in my new cabinet so need to sort it out
I bought a 24w external PSU (Phobya?) - comes with a single Molex connector and plugs into the mains. The downside is that it's always on, so in turn the fans are always on as well so I need to stick something in the middle that will at least let me tweak the speeds (or turn off) of individual fans even if it isn't temperature controller.

Have got 4 enclosures within the cabinet - for HTPC, NAS, Sky HD and PS3. The HTPC and NAS need the fans to be running most of the time, PS3 only when I'm using it and I'm not even sure how hot Sky HD boxes get - I put the 4th fan there for symmetry and future options.
