external hard drive and mac. Compatible?

I was wondering if external hard drives were compatible with apple macs?

a mate on msn reckons it'll work but only if I format a partition to FAT32 so the mac can recognise it as macs cant read ntfs partitions? Is there any truth in this as I have browsed my windows ntfs partitions from a mac before over a network and that worked fine.
