External hard drive encryption

What do you guys recommend for an external USB HD encryption?

I know truecrypt exists, but does it totally mess up the performance?

Anybody recommend other alternatives?

There are lots, but most cost money. I personally use truecrypt and it's never too slow for me. It's probably the best all rounder in terms of freeware.

There are no performance issues as far as TC is concerned. I use it all the time and tansfer TBs worth of data to TC encrypted drives without issue.

If there is a perfomance hit then it's measured in milliseconds because I have noticed no difference.

If you have a fairly modern CPU (nothing special) then the performance hit is pretty much nothing. It obviously is there but I challenge anyone to notice it.
