I've bought an external hard drive with a 300gb drive but it is partitioned and 20ish gb is not available. Do I need the partition and if I delete it will I get the full 300gb capacity? I am only using it as a back up to store my files and will not be mounting an OS on it.

Is the drive rated at 300 gigabytes? If so, you'll never see the missing space. HDDs are rated with a funky system that makes you think they're larger than they are. A 300 "gigabyte" disk is 300 billion bytes. However, there is not 1000 kilobytes in a megabyte, there's 1024. That continues up to that size. In a 300 "gigabyte" disk actually contains 279.396772 gigabytes.

It's disconnected now as I was trying it in the office. I'll see what I can do when I install it at home. How do i post a screenshot? Can you point me towards a help link on this site??

Press "print screen" then open paint and paste the image in. Save it as a .jpg somewhere on your computer. Then go to http://imageshack.us and upload the image to them.

Then paste the "direct link to image" on here :)
