External HD Caddy Problem

I have just swapped the HD out of my Powermac so I wanted to use the old one as an external HD for my MacBook. However when I put it in the caddy and connect it all up it doesn't show up in OS X. Is there a reason for this? Do I need to format the drive or something before putting it in the caddy? Thanks

It's a weird one... maybe try putting it back in the powermac and formatting it from there like you said, no idea if it'll help though. I'm rubbish at Mac hardware

Put it back in and formatted to FAT but still no joy, its just not showing up using USB or Firewire. Surely it should just work?

It should work, sounds like an issue with the caddy, have you tried another drive in it ? or a different usb port? as you never know.

Haven't tried another drive, not got one to be honest. I bought a IDE caddy for an old HD ages ago and that didn't work either. Seems like I am doomed not to get caddies to work :mad:
