Hi. I have a buffalo 1TB external USB HD that i use at home on either desktop or laptop, also at work and I also take it to my friends and family's homes.

It is also plugged into my PS3 to enable viewing of videos and photos.

Is there any way to encrypt the HD or even is it worth doind.

Seen some software on the net, but it seems, they all need you to install something on the pc/laptop your going to use it with, which isnt ideal. Plus I dont think it would then work with the PS3.

Any ideas? or is it not really worth it for family photos etc.

It is formatted to FAT32.

Thank you

can't think of a way. You could encrypt certain folders on the disk but you wouldn't be able to access them with the PS3

I would say it's not really worth the bother unless you have sensitive bank details etc. If someone found it they might browse through the photos but unless there are any dodgy ones on there i wouldn't worry about it too much!

edit - i do encrypt my external hard drive which i use as an offsite backup and I can plug that into a pc at my parent's house, and then access the encrypted file shares via a ps3 using standard network file shares. The PC does the on the fly decryption via built in windows (NTFS required).

You could use Truecrypt to create an encrypted container (essentially a large encrypted file containing many files etc.) which would still allow it to be read on the PS3 (with the exception of this one container.

You'd need a PC to open the container, assuming you knew the passphrase - I don't think you need to install Truecrypt to open it, pretty sure there's a way of making it portable (or perhaps it already is!)

You still need truecrypt to open it, there is a portable version but you need admin rights to run it last time I checked. You'll probably want to reformat the disk to NTFS if you go down this route (in fact I'd consider formatting to NTFS anyway if you get the chance) ... but then I'm guessing it won't work in the ps3 then. It's probably not worth the compromise overall if you're not particularly bothered about it being lost.
