I recently bought myself a external HD caddy for an old 80Gb IDE drive. However I can't format it to work with OS X.

I plug it in and use the disk utility to try and reformat it to Mac OS Extended. However when I click erase I get an error talking about input/ouput.

Does anyone know why I can't reformat this drive? Is it something to do with jumper settings on the HD itself?

Thanks

Have you tried doing it in the Disk Utility of the CD?

Start up with it in the drive and hold down C. Then select Disk Utility, and see if that works.

Have you got the jumpers set to "Master" on the drive itself?

There is no software limitation with IDE drives, so unless the drive has been corrupted then i'd say it's a hardware issue.

..can't harm if it's been unsuccesfull when trying as "master".

I sense the drive might be corrupt on some level though.
