Just trying to transfer a 1.5gb file from my laptop (win 7 64bit) to my external HD x1tb and transfer rate has dropped right down to 400kb/sec

HD has always been fine. It is in Fat32 format. Any idea why this maybe?

It is about three quarters full.

Just check defrag on it and coming up at 0% defrag.

Just wondered why suddenly it has started to transfer slow.

No errors showing up in 'device manager'

Checked USB cable and even tried another, still the same.

264kb/sec now

Just had this error come up

an unexpected error is keeping you from copying the file. If you continue to receive this error, you can use the error code to search for help with this problem.

Error 0x8007045D: the request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.

25MB - 30MB is what you should be expecting as regards transfer speed

Run a full disk check on the external drive, when the little box pops up tick both boxes and let
the disk check run

Just tried again.

Sent a 1.4GB .avi from external HD to laptop and was getting 30/35mb /sec transfer speed. So spot on.

Tried to send it back, (laptop to HD) went really slow......back down to 400kb/sec

So it is to do with it GOING to the external HD.

Any ideas?

doing a full check disc now.

tried a different cable? is the drive powered by usb? tried a different usb socket?

Most possibly the interface between drive and USB is on its way out, no way to tell for sure without pulling it apart and trying it with a replacement part.

+1 to the above

try it without the caddy
if that's fine, try with another cable & try with another caddy

Been running checkdisc.

So far it has taken nearly 17 hours.

The drive is three quarters full.

Can it take a while ? seems reading on the net, its possible.

Wish I could actually see how it is doing.

Try it without the caddy

Whatever make the drive is, run the manufacturers testing tools for it
