I'm 90% sure i know the answer to this because I've researched it elsewhere, but I'd just like confirmation from someone here who's actually done it.

Can I simply plug an external HDD into a PS3 via USB and will it play AVI files?

I'm hoping to rip all the friends series onto a HDD as we pretty much always have them on.
I know it would be a lot of work, but worth it in the end :)

Also, would it be quite user friendly to locate and play files from the HDD??

The last is probably a silly question, but my PS3 is sat under the tree and I've never used one so not sure what to expect in terms of the OS and functionality etc....

Cheers

Yep you can. If, for whatever reason, you find that some files don't show up, you just press Triangle on the external drive's icon, and then select Display All. From there you can also easily select multiple files to copy across to the internal HDD.

It will work form an external FAT32 HDD, you will be able to browse the folders etc.

I wouldn't go encoding the whole series without trying an episode on your PS3 though. Not all divx/xvid profiles are supported.

I have not encoded any divx xvid myself (only H.264) files.

Cheers guys. :)
Good point on the testing it with one episode first, was gonna crack on with it so it'd be ready to go christmas day, but it'd break my heart encoding for so long only to find it doesn't work!!!

Worst case scenario, encode 1, upload it somewhere and get someone with a PS3 to test it for you. Files cannot be that large considering there are rips on the internet that are normally around the 175mb mark and perfectly watchable.

As the others have said it should work fine if it's formatted to FAT32.

If you put a folder on the drive called VIDEO and place all xvid etc in there then the PS3 will find them straight away - otherwise you can press triangle and search all folders. You can also create folders called MUSIC and PHOTO for pictures and music.

Are you ripping them from DVD? If so then I use a little program called 'Magic DVD Ripper' and it does the job superbly and quickly ;)
