external hdd docking stations?

howdy all, sorry to be a pest

little question, anyone have any experience of this type of thingy,

i have a number of old dead pcs laying about and there are a few bits and bobs on the harddrives that i wanna look at and possilby move to my new pc, so i'd thought this was a pretty decent & cheap way to do it

USB To SATA & IDE External Docking Station (sorry cant post link as it's to a competitor)

are these type of things reliable or is there a better way to do it?

yeah i had an akasa external case its basically just an IDE to e-sata converter with connecions and a pretty case. They do 3GB/s on e-sata which makes them decent for backing up data but if you have space in the case you will get better results wiring up to the mobo.
