External HDD - Requesting to be Formatted

So my sister gave me a call last night saying that her HDD that she has used to store all her photos on from the past 4 years of travelling, is now asking her to format it before use.

This has come about by the sounds of things because the drive was pulled out of the USB socket whilst in use.

What are her best options at recovering the data on the drive. Are there any programs out there that will help her/me or can this be sent of somewhere for recovery.

Try Recuva which is free. If you have no joy take the HDD out of the enclosure and put it in a SATA docking station or connect it to your PC, then use Get Data Back (not free but excellent).
