External HDDs with USB and Ethernet

Hi,

Is it possible for an external HDD unit, featuring USB and ethernet ports, to have both connected simultaneously?

I have an media player supporting a single USB2 port and want to be able to refresh the data to the external HDD with the minimum of fuss.

Is that a NAS drive? Generally you can't have 2 simultaneous connections into the drive - but you can have it connected via a NAS (which will manage mulriple connections via LAN).

Yes, I guess it would be effectively a NAS. What would the effect be of plugging it in to a router, for example, and connecting it into a USB device? Which would fail?

You don't want to do that. Really. It's one or the other - Ethernet or USB. Two inputs at the same time=***ed drive.
