External links in IE7, new tab?

Anyone found a fix for IE7 where opening an external link in some programs results in a new window and not a new tab? Classic offender is links from mIRC, they will always open in a new window. Ideally I only wan 1 instance of IE7 running and any link that is opened will always open in a new tab within that instance. Every other browser seems capable, am I missing something?

Still opens in a new window instead of a tab. Is the ctrl trick not for opening links from within html in a new tab? My query relates explicitly to external applications.

Have you tryed tools/internet options/tab settings/

open links from other programs threee options I have mine set to the current tab or window.

Yea got those all set

it seems MS programs operate correctly but other 3rd party software doesnt. I dont know if its the way the url is called from within those programs that makes it not work, but I dont understand it all that much. Just dont see how it can work with firefox/maxthon etc but not IE7. Oh well...
