Does anyone have recommendations for a hdd enclosure or all in one unit that has esata and is powered by the laptop itself - ie, it does not need to be plugged into a 240v socket ..

2.5" or 3.5" ? if 2.5" then Yes there are enclosures that will work from laptop only.

Well ... therein lies the answer: a 2.5" hdd is indeed a recommendation and I have found an enclosure that specifies power over USB and data over the ESATA cable .. :D (http://aphnetworks.com/reviews/icy_box_ib_266stus_b)

Just ordered a 320GB 2.5" from OC so lets hope that it all pans out ok!
