External soundcards?

Any difference between getting a built in soundcard or having an external one?

Also, can someone recommend me an external soundcard? Budget of around £100.

A bit of everything to be honest..mainly music.

My requirements? I don't know how to reply as i don't know too much about soundcards.

well if its just music i can confirm you will notice a small difference with an X-fi, however its gaming where they really come into their own.
