Hi All,

Im looking to find a decent priced, external storage unit for hard drives that i can either attach to my network (preferred), or just directly into a PC (eSata, Sata, USB etc) to hook up to my media PC. Probably cheaper to a single PC?

Ideally want it to contain 4+ drives of no less than 2TB a drive.

I dont care for RAID and would prefer not to lose a 2TB drive in a 5 hard drive unit running RAID 5 for example.

Im not sure though how the drives are presented to the network / pc though? Do you have to RAID because you get only 1 connection to the PC. Or do you have one per drive?

Ive seen a few around but nothing really I can judge if its any good.

Any ideas anyone?

Thanks,
D.

Take a look at Raidsonic, they're the manufacturer/distributor behind IcyDock, Stardom and most of the other well known enclosure brands. They do a few multi disk NAS boxes and a few stand alone enclosures.

there are usually several options with a multi bay enclosure that has those abilities,

Raid (0, 1, 5 etc), you can see them as a single drive or in a few different configurations like 2x 2 drive volumes

Concatenation, where the drives are lumped together as one big drive

JBOD (just bunch of discs) where you see each drive individualy

and you are not limited to 1 drive per connection, although you might need a port multiplier capable esata connection to see more than 1 drive when using esata
