External wall insulation

We have 'open' porch (those 1930's semi style houses). The right hand wall (see below) in the porch before you enter the house is single skin, and on the internal side of this wall is a bedroom. Every year we have massive problems with condensation just on this small section of internal wall, and i was hoping this year to attempt some DIY. My thoughts were, - could we put some external insulation board attached to the wall (Porch side ). If so, would we need to seal it, and would we need to leave an air gap for cold bridging? We dont have much depth to work with, about 40mm. Any suggestions? House is very similar to this'

I did it a while back - thread here, post 81

50mm celotax/PIR then tile backer board glued to it. I then skimmed the top to render and will eventually tile the bottom.
