Leading on somewhat from the other thread where these videos were posted:

I was just entertaining a strange line of thought which I thought I might share. I'm a little lost on the finer details myself, so I'll try and explain as best I can to give you some attempt to understand what I'm trying to get at. You'll have to grant me a little leeway if I've made a complete mess of things; it's the gist of the argument I'm trying to get at. ;)

I recently read Brian Greene's Elegant Universe which explains the development of String and M-Theory. During reading it -- which the videos reminded me of -- I was struck with certain thought experiments regarding extra dimensions and divinity or the possible existence of God(s).

Now, just as we cannot see or notice our interactions within the 2D realm (as we live within the 3D) and cannot see other hypothetical dimensions (5D to 10D) -- or perhaps even exist in such dimensions -- it is possible that perhaps a higher being exists within these realms itself. Likewise, should such a being exist within say the 8D it would technically be biblical in nature and omnipotent by our own understanding. It would possibly be able to see the past, future and all potential alternatives. Of course, just as we cannot influence strings or time, it is perhaps possible that such a being cannot influence anything within the 3D plane and thus explains why prayers are not answered directly. Even more interesting, should divinity be just an observer, is it not possible that perhaps a quantum effect may be observable whereby the act of observation in itself alters the outcome?

Indeed, just as the above videos explain, as we manage to hypothesize the 10D, we observe infinity upon infinity. Surely, within such a dimension -- should it be correct -- a god or gods as we understand them to be should exist purely due to infinity itself.

Anyway, I know it's tenuous and I'm probably just talking rubbish, but I'm interested in what others have to say. Thoughts?

I know its probably not the intellectual debate you wanted as your first reply but, Yes

Sounds like more like some spiritual occult psuedo mathmatic mumbo jumbo to me I don't know how these people have got the cheek to draw paychecks

Those videos are simply someones interpretation of how one should visualise higher dimensions - other than that they have little-to-no meaningful content. The type of extra dimensions talked about in modern theories of physics are assumed to be "small", or for the mathematically inclined, compact.

Imagine a colony of ants who live their lives on an infinitely long, and very thin piece of string. From their point of view, there's pretty much only one spatial dimension to their universe: they can either go forwards or backwards - the diameter of the string they're on is so thin that any movement in the "left" or "right" dimension returns them to their original position. So from their point of view they live in a 1+1 (1 space and 1 time) dimensional universe - the other spatial dimension (which constitutes their ability to move around the circumference of the string) is soooo small, they don't notice it.

The modern theories of mathematical physics that incorporate more dimensions than we see, do so in such a way that the extra dimensions are kept "small" (compact). The fact that aren't aware of these extra dimensions is because they're so small (c.f. the ant analogy).

Thanks for that very interesting! It does open you up more to the idea of a higher being as it were although ill stick being an atheist thanks! So it is possible for someone in the 8D to see people in 3D etc?

If what string theory and the intepretation of those predictions is correct, then it's possible that if beings existed in these extra dimensions they could be considered "gods".

However two things you've got to consider, a) we're the ones coming up with these theories, they could be horribly wrong and b) if these beings could exist in higher dimensions, they're only gods because we class them so (by being omnipotent etc).

They could have all or no influence on us and may not exist entirely.

Until we can actually see it or feel it in some REAL way not just the human mind dreaming it up then ill take it with a truck load of salt, that goes for both god and higher dimensions.

I've always thought that if a god existed, it would most likely be an extra terrestrial of some sort. I like the idea of god being part of a species living in one of the higher dimensions, but there's simply too much conjecture for it to be taken too seriously.
