Extra keyboard buttons?

I've seen many keyboards with extra buttons like g1 through g12.

Is it only possible to assign already used buttons to them keys ie. F1, a, / etc etc or can you make extra buttons and just call them g1?

I ask because I've just started playing a game again (wow) and got a new mmo mouse but don't want to assign keys that already have a function to them if possible. I normally use the numpad buttons but I've noticed lately they use the same buttons as the top of my keyboard. Some of the non num locked buttons don't allow assignment so I end up with some dead buttons.

It basically depends on the keyboard, some have predefined extra keys and others have the ability to assign what you want to them.

If they're called g1 through g12 then they're likely programmable though.

You can get keyboard remapper programs that let you remap your keys which might be a cheaper way of doing it, although be careful with any tool (maybe check wow forums) that alters the way the game/windows acts because some games are pretty 'aggressive' when it comes to cheat detection etc these days. I've seen some reports of the macro tools that come with keyboards causing issues with some games too....
