Can't remember which channel showed it - if it was on 4, then you might have a chance with 4oD, otherwise I doubt there will be a legal way of getting it for free.

It was on the BBC im pretty sure, but as far as i know, there is no other legal way to watch it without buying it.

Lovefilm (or equivalent) isn't so bad for this sort of thing, in my experience. Assuming you get through enough per month (and don't desire a collection), can work out a lot cheaper, and is fairly convenient.
