I was wondering if anyone could advise me on a digital camera that can stand shock, cold and water. I saw a lumix one for £230 and another in a catalogue store for £200 but I'm not sure if they're any good as I'm not too clued up on digital cameras.

I'm looking to spend no more than around £200 and I'll be taking it skiing and climbing so it needs the shock proofing and such. I've seen a few friends cameras and 10MP seems to be quite adequate for me. Thanks in advance for any help.

I'd buy a Canon D10 or a Panasonic DMC-TS1, £205/£209.

Depends what you need, the Canon is more rugged, offers better picture quality in daylight, under water and with flash but the Panasonic has a wider zoom range, better low light performance and much better video.

^^^ This. You really don't need a bulky, 'waterproof' camera. Just get a slim one you can fit in an inside jacket pocket and you'll be fine.

Thanks for the responses. I think I'll try and save a bit of money by taking the above advice and buy a good camera and maybe add some insurance to cover myself.

Good job. The canon ixus range are fairly tough little cameras. Mine's survived multiple drops! They're also nice and small to hide away. You could also add a waterproof housing (expensive, £100-150) if you really wanted...

I'll have a look at them now, I'm a bit restricted with buying on the internet as I'm away skiing on Thursday so it'll probably go down to haggling at shops which is always good fun. I know I shouldn't have left it so late but I've been busy visiting people as I'm off to the navy in the first week of March. I like getting advice from overclockers, if it's opinion based information you need (ie. not easily googled like some annoying threads) a handful of posts give so much more help than review sites. I'm always paranoid they're biased for some misplaced reason.

The Panasonic Lumix range has always impressed me. Quite a few friends have had various models of them and they produce fairly decent images for a compact. Definitely worth a look.

The olympus waterproof ones are usually classed as quite good however any camera will do really. I carry my DSLR in an unpadded backpack with spare lenses when I ski and i'm someone that pushes myself and takes the occasional spill.

I ended up buying the 14MP Sony Cyber-shot as my ex had the previous model and it was really good. Add that to the fact that when I went to the stock availability pad in the catalogue store it came up as only £129.99 instead of £149.99 which was nice, I bought an 8GB card as well as I'm one of those people that take a a few too many pictures. I know I shouldn't as if I go further up the hill there will probably be a better view but I end up taking them anyway. That was only a camera phone too.

It's a shame I didn't buy it before I went fellwalking because it was awesome. Snow at the top and sun, lake and grass at the bottom. If you ignore the rain Cumbria has it's moments.
