hi i have an old laptop and I've been having extreme overheating and I don't know the cause, the overheating has damaged the laptop from the outside and left marks on it, as if its been burnt! (I only use the laptop for browsing and youtube)

First try checking for Viruses or malware, this sort of thing can happen if the machine is pegged at 100% with a mining Virus.
Second, try cleaning out any vents or intakes.
Third, try disassembling it to re-paste the CPU and GPU.

If that doesn't make enough of a difference, try a laptop cooling stand.

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Admittedly given the state of the thing I wouldn't fault you for just replacing it.

It’ll be dust in the fins of the cooler and the thermal paste will have dried up most likely. Happened to many of my old laptops.
Disassembly and clean made a massive difference.
That being said, YouTube on older laptops can make the CPU work very hard as there may not have acceleration for video decoding built in.

alright thanks guys, ill try the solutions

in case you are not aware, there are also many good programs you can use to check the temperature the chips inside are running at - coretemp is probably the easiest to use:

https://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/

for laptops it is not unusual to see temperatures exceed 90 degrees C at times, but it's not ideal if it's staying that high for long

HWmonitor/HWINFO will give you information from more sensors, but can be a bit daunting if you don't know what it all means

but as others have said, it almost certainly needs a good clean out and probably re-application of thermal paste (or replacement ;) )
