Physically are the normal lower priced cards identical? Is the only difference the Extreme editions have been overclocked? (and this can be done by utility anyway?)

Do the Extreme editions have faster memory and more cooling?

Leadtek GeForce 7800GT 256MB GDDR3 VIVO TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-069-LT)

Leadtek GeForce 7800GT Extreme Edition 256MB GDDR3 VIVO TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-073-LT)

If they're exactly the same are the Extreme editions sold on a kinda lie? So should I just buy the cheaper one then if I want to overclock do so?

As far as I know the extreme additions are 'guaranteed' to run at the frequencies stated.

Though you are partially right, you are purchasing something that you could quite easily do yourself in most cases. For example, I looked at all of the 7800GTs and GTXs before making my purchase (see sig). I only need 30mhz on the core and 50 on the memory to get GTX speeds. Which I think you can safely say is guaranteed (unless I have a total lemon of a card).

I'll leave it up to you decide ;)

you are still missing 4 pixel pipes and a vertex shader though.

Yeah, think you need a 7800gt to run at around 520Mhz to make up for just the 4 missing pixel pipelines. I heard somewhere that one dude managed to open them using Rivatuner though i doubt any ones from here can seeing as they been laser cut by nVidia - think they learnt there lesson from the 6 series LE cards.

I thought the extreme editions also have better yield cores so the possibility of overclocking them is further?
And the whole buying a 7800gt - overclocking to gtx levels doesnt fit with me, because you can just buy a gtx and overclock that way past what the gt would get!
Still both good cards.

Or you could get a much faster 512mb card then the 7800gt Extreme Edition..for a little extra money.

PowerColor ATI Radeon X1800 XT 512MB GDDR3 AVIVO TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-048-PC) Price: £249.95 (£293.69 Including VAT at 17.5%)

The Extreme editions are the same cards that are factory overclocked and perhaps use better yeild cores that have a better chance at a higher overclock.

But the main difference is that they offer a guaranteed overclock.
