Current PC specs:

Intel Core 2 duo E6300 1.86ghz
1GB DDR RAM

Extremely poor spec I know.

Obviously I need a new motherboard and processor and by the looks of it DDR3 RAM as well.

Don't care if it's AMD or Intel.

Not bothered about USB 3.0

Budget £100-£150

Two Spec's here:

Both not the best specs in the world but for that price range..... personally i would go with the Intel set up if you can afford the little extra as you will have more of an upgrade path with them should you require to upgrade to something like a 2500k or an ivybridge i3 or something

or as others have said look in the MM

if your drives are SATA then take a look at one of the ones i recommended but theres probably a part in there that could be improved with a bit more knowledge on certain parts
(stulid will know :) )

Need a new one then, £17 more.

But it isnt that hard to remove the side panel and actually check if theres a fat ribbon cable going to it.

150MB/s vs 300MB/s (roughly/rounded up/down)

This is of no concern for a mechanical harddrive, only a modern SSD will suffer.

What is the full spec of your system? Mobo, power supply

What do you want from the upgrade. Better gaming, more processing power etc.

You may be better with a Q6600, a little more ram and a GPU

Your current budget gets a dual core that's not much better than you have now except a little more ram.

Dude a i3 2120 and a h61/67 will dump on that PhenomII even if you cant overclock the i3, its still faster/cooler and more power efficient.
