I was on my work computer today and decided I would bring my graphics card in with me, maybe get some better games on the go.

The specs are:

Asus P8P67 Mobo - Intel i5 2500 processor - BeQuiet 700w PSU - Kingston Anniversary 8GB Ram - Gigabyte GTX 780 3GB OC Windforce Graphics card.

The problem I am having is strange, some games such as Aliens vs Predator run with 160fps plus, Sniper Ghost Warrior 2 runs between 50 - 80 fps, both of these games on the highest possible graphics settings and 1280 x 720 resolution.

Even Crysis 3 on Ultra will run perfectly no stutter or slowdown.

Then we have games such as Grand Theft Auto 4 which will not run above 10 fps at any time.
Same goes for Prototype 2 which barely reaches 15, except Prototype is on Medium graphics..

Is there any reason why my £400 graphics card cannot run an old GTA game?

GTA 4 is notorious for causing trouble. There are lots of forum posts about tricks you can try. Apparently setting CPU core affinity to 1 core can help with the issue.

For Prototype 2, I haven't heard of such issues.

I'm assuming you have the latest nvidia drivers, so it is clearly a problem with the game.

I played gta4 on my 670, you cannot have draw distance on full as i remember rightly as it causes the fps to dive.

My 670 used to run it fine and my 780 runs it even finer < if thats a word.

Check the draw distances and shadows and reduce them, sometimes certain settings make 0 difference to the visual quality of gta4.

As said above...GTA IV is one of the worst PC port game in history...as for Prototype 2, I recall that game using uses like 1 or 2 threads, so would only uses 2 cores of the CPU? With that said, I recall my housemate back then was playing it on a i3 2120 and GTX560Ti 2GB, and with minimun frame rate at around 25fps+...so there's definitely something wrong if your i5 2500 and GTX780 if you are getting only like frame rate below 15 most of the time...

I remember GTA IV being a total CPU hog. Certain ingame settings have a bigger effect than others on how much it tries to process through the CPU.
