extremely strange problem with defrag

well basically, whenever i run windows defrag and it gets to the stage of defragging, the cpu usage jumps up to 50%, then 1%, then every app i click on freezes? and when i do it in safe mode, the cpu usage is ALWAYS 50% with no apps having any cpu usage? (might just be the fact the amd optimizer doesnt load in safe mode though?) im thinking virus or corrupted files? chkdsk ran fine and brought up nothing. temps are fine for all components.

edit: this doesnt look good.. got a read error when i did hdtune.. going to do the error scan on hd tune, and see if anything comes up. i hope its not a damaged hard drive, i messed around with gparted and linux abit so the partitions might be damaged or something :\ ill try reseating the sata cable no matter what the results of the scan are. also doing sfc /scannow.

edit2: at roughly 32gb, the scan goes down to ~5mb/s :( i think the drive is dying :( i did the quick scan though (takes about 70 seconds) and it didnt pick any errors on that. sfc found 0 errors.

edit3: used the western digital tools and it seems it is dying :( rma time i think :( might try backing everything up, writing zeros then reinstalling first though, i dont know though.

downloaded western digital's DOS version of their utility
chkdsk = passed
western digital's "quick check" = fail
running the "full media check" ATM, when it finishes ill backup the important stuff to some random 80gb drive i found when looking for the packaging/reciept, write zeros to the drive, and then get it replaced tommorow morning:) the only problem i can see with getting it replaced is that it passes chkdsk and SMART tests, ill take along the cd of the western digital DOS utility with me so i can prove its not working.

well i finished the "advanced scan" and it now says its "fixed", hd tune runs, but the tranfer rate goes aslow as 1.6mb, disk defrag isnt freezing anything but is going very slow, im not sure of the exact return policies of where i bought it from but i probably cant return it now, not sure if to ask about it, or just keep using the drive and risk losing data. still going to back up though, my warranty with western digital doesnt end till 2010 or something and im sure the drive will be long replaced by then.

ok, i dont know or care why, but for some reason the old 80gb is running in PIO mode. ill just backup everything i absolutely cant get back. thinking ill have to grab some dvd-r's and backup to them instead, but for now everything which is unreplacable will be backed up rather than the whole drive.

edit: AHH! it just froze in defrag again. atleast everythings safe and backed up now, ill wait till tommorow till i continue trying to sort this out lol. hdtune is closer to normal than before.
