Extrememly annoyed with XFX

To cut a long story short I used to run two 7900 GTX 512's in SLI. That is until one of the cards died. Problem was that I bought the card second hand of a friend who originally got it from an IT reseller who only sold to companies (he got it on the cheap through work basically, or though work contacts).

Anyway I got in touch with XFX since they have a two owner warranty and tried to get a replacement. I was informed that I'd have to contact the original reseller first. I did this and they informed me that the original purchaser had to do it. I contacted him and then the ball got rolling. He told me that he'd been in touch with XFX and they wanted to card back to inspect/repair/replace. So I boxed it up and sent it to him, and he sent it on. Couple of weeks later they send him a replacement card. Only it's a 7950 GT with 256MB RAM. I told him he could tell XFX to ram it as I didn't want a card with less power, less RAM and less cost then my original. He got back to them and they are saying as they don't make the 7900 GTX anymore they sent this, as in their holy up their own ass opinion is that it's an equal card.

I'm really annoyed as this card is as useful as a chocolate fireguard to me. I also doubt I'd be ablt to get much for it. I either want a replacement 7900 GTX, or if that's not possible I'd want cash back or a 320MB 8800GTS.

Basically, where do I stand with all this?

Wow - that's pretty poor going. Shame on XFX.

Sorry to hear you've having to go through all this crap. Perhaps if you email them some explicit benches with the two cards in, and point out that a 7950GT is useless for SLi with a 7900GTX 512, then they will have no choice but to comply? After all, they've already admited the old card was faulty by sending you a new one. Not that you should have to wait and/or pay for shipping again though...

*Makes metal note - stear clear of XFX... BFG for the win.

Oh yeah, XFX can ram it. I won't be touching their products again with a very long bargepole. Incidentally, I had two 7800's before and one broke, though they did replace it.

BFG for me next.

Should either give you the cash back or get you to send the other card back and send you a pair of 640mb gts's.

Just found out it's a 512 MB version. Still, I'm now asking for a 8800 GTX 320 and I might sell my current one if they comply.

If I do get a GTS 320, would it be worth selling my 7900 and using the cash for a second? Or just sell the GTS straight away, sell mine too and get a GTX instead?

Ie, what's better, two GTS 320's or a GTX?

The GTX would be better. A by that I mean better choice, I don't think it'd provide as much FPS as a low to med res as the SLi GTS's, but it's more future proof if you had the funds available, also probably depends on your resolution you play games at, as SLI 320's still only gives you 320mb VRAM to play with, not 640MB, whereas the GTX is a single card with 768MB.

I play at 1280x1024 (my monitors max), although I'd love to buy a widescreen 22" or so monitor the wife would kill me. So I'll probably be staying with my current Philips 190x6 for at least another 8-10 months. Will the next gen nVidia card will be out then? Not sure I could afford the extra for the GTX, depends how much I could get for my current 7900 GTX and (if I get one) GTS 320.

So considering the resolution, the SLI setup would be best yes?

Possibly. But having used SLI in the past I would still prefer to go for the GTX single card solution, even ignoring the video ram issue. But, if you have one 320mb GTS already... well it's definitely less hassle to go with the second GTS.

Why not just sell the 2 cards you have and buy a 8800 gts 640 or a
hd2900xtx as both of these have more memory for a future monitor.
I am pretty sure both of these cards would fetch around enough money
with the gt being new. If not defo enough for the 320gts saves you dealing
with xfx again.

True, but then "they win".

IMO better to squeeze them for whatever you can get, then never buy another one fo their products again. Bad service deserves no better.

I'll decide and look into it further when I get a reply from XFX. As for the ATI card, I'd prefer to stay with nVidia as I have a nVidia board.

Well, lookin on a well know auction site you can probably get about £250 for that pair of cards which will get you a GTS 640Mb.

Mind you for an extra £50-£70 if you look around you can get a GTX... ;)

I had exactly the same situation. I had a 7800 GTX 512 die on me last year that was actually within warranty and initially I was offered £100 refund (it cost me £510 at the time) and I refused this, so I was promised a 7900 GX2. Did I get this? No I didn't, instead after about two months I ended up with a 7900GT which I promptly sold on 'a site' and got £160. Pathetic XFX and I'm not even allowed to **** them off somewhere else due to business ties...

Well if XFX say tough, you're keeping the 7950, I think I'll just sell it on a well known auction site, keep the 7900 for now and perhaps start saving so when I do sell the 7900 I'll be able to get a 8800 GTX as a direct replacement.
