Eyefinity, I'm asking before buying  If I buy a hd 7850 - its max res is 2560x1600, so how do peeps make it go 5760x1080?

Thats the max res for a single output I believe. All you do is connect the 3 monitors, you will need DP adpaters if you have non DP monitors.

I've been looking into this and I believe you only need one active DP adapter for an eyefinity setup, not one for each screen. Please correct me if I'm wrong as I've only just started looking into this to set up for myself.

One thing I'm not sure of though, is can you set up eyefinity using two monitors without either of them using a DP?

Hi yes in my eyefinity setup I'm using 3 monitors,, 2 via dvi stright to gpu itself and one active display port to dvi for my third moniter

Active display port is required if you are using monitors with DVI connectors and running at 120hz. My card (7950) only has one dual link dvi output and I have two monitors running on Startech active adapters converting my 2 display port outputs to dual link DVI. This (when it all works) runs all three monitors at 120hz.

Be aware that an eyefinity set up will usually cause you some kind of pain!!

But it still looks amazing when you play a properly supported game across three screens.

And as above the max res of 25600 x 1600 is per output.

A 7850 I would imagine will struggle a little at higher resolutions though - especially in demanding games. Maybe someone with a 7850 and eyefinity could give you an insight.

Well a 7850 is around the same level as a 6950 iirc. Gaming at 5760x1080 is possible with a lot of detail levels turned down. All depends on the game though.

For clarification you need an active miniDP or DP to dual link DVI adapter for 1080p 120Hz.

There are ~£75 compared to the single link active adapters which are ~£20-£25.

this is the one i use.

which turned out to be an xfx package

although when i got it i forgot that it was mini dp whre my 2 6850's are full size dp so hade to get another converter.

at 5760x1080 with the 2 cards i got 60fps on bf3 at medium settings. was good fun.

i spent more time looking at monitors with small bezels. that was the hardest part.

before ocuk stared doing the samsung package, they would have been perfect
