eyefinity S23A750D pointless?

Hi,

I’m a casual (6 hours a week) gamer and I’m looking to upgrade my PC and monitor setup soon.

I’m planning to spend about £1K on a PC and I want to get a triple head Eyefinity setup.

I’ve been looking at the Samsung S23A750D for a while, but I’m wondering if I’m wasting my money buying three of these. They may do 120Hz but I don’t think I’ll be able to get 120fps without sacrificing resolution or settings.

The games I play are… Team Fortress2 (which might be able to do eyefinity at that res)…. and that’s about though I will be getting BF3 when It’s out, but I don’t think I’ll get 120fps out of that for three screens.

So am I waiting my money on three 120Hz monitors when I won’t get highres 120fps out of the pc???

Should I….

A) Get the new PC and 3x S23A750D?
B) Get the new PC and 3x a different cheaper monitor that’s good but not 120Hz
C) Get the new PC and 3x S23A750D and add a second GFX card later for that Eyefinity 120fps bliss.

Any advice appreciated….

Ps. haven’t decided what pc to get but budget is around £1k + Vat
Ps. I use 4 monitors at work so I'm used to the bezzles getting in the way (though they are 19")

AFAIK 120hz is what is needed for 3d gaming, so for eyefinity you should just go for a standard monitor. If you want to eyefinity with BF3 you'll definitely need a crossfire setup.

Cheers. I guess so. But even If I want a 120Hz smooth 2D display in BF3 I still need 120Fps which I doubt I'll be able to get even with 2 cards cross fired . Might get a away with it in TF2 though.

So It's a lot of cash to spend when I cannot actually realise the expensive part (the 120Hz)

Is there any particular reason you want Eyefinity (or a multiple monitor setup) other than Gaming? Many people have an idealistic vision of a lovely spread of monitors splaying across the entirity of the desk when in reality they would have preferred a single larger display.

If it's purely for an immersive gaming experience I would strongly recommend the S27A750 instead - very immersive, more vertical screen area and no compromising on performance. If you are also looking to use the monitors for work purposes, with multiple monitors being an advantage, you could probably have a think about a different setup.

I guess I'm look at 3x24" becase that's close to what I'm used to at work. I like the large desktop as you get much more screen space. Most importantly it looks more "serious" .

Though a single 27" would be a comparable game play experience and I'd get all the 120hz smoothness while avoiding all the hassle of configuring games for 3 monitors. So there is a lot going for that idea.

Thing is I've never really tried to game on 3 monitors (not many demo setups like that in PC World for some reason ) or a 27" so I don't know what the difference is.

But if you say a S27A750 is better then I really should go for that.....

I'm not clued up on my Samsung model numbers, though I just had a Google. Jesus. You are up for spending £1200 on three monitors for 'looks' and 'TF2'?

If I were you, I'd be spending the monitor budget on a 30" Dell IPS, like the 3011WFP, or maybe three Hazro 27" IPS monitors (much higher resolution than the Samsungs) if you're barmy. Then spend about £800 on the PC, as the rest is frankly wasted on Source games, even at 2560x1600. Then, when BF3 comes out, the new GPU ranges from AMD and Nvidia will be close, and you can upgrade if required with all/some of the money saved over if required.

My recommendation is to forget the multi-monitor set-up if your mostly into FPS games if your really into driving games it might be worth it. Personally thou I couldn't stand the dicking about that my mate seems to have to do to get his games working in eyefinity. So just get yourself a single Samsung 27" 120hz monitor and chuck around £600 on a video card(s). I run 2 nVidia 580's in SLI on a single 120hz display to get that magical 120FPS and I'm loving it and then for driving games I have a separate display (a Sumsung 32" HDTV) with my steering wheel permanently set-up.

BTW I personally found multiplayer gaming at 2560 x 1600 on a 30" monitor (U3011) counter productive with the exception of RTS games. Games look great on the U2711 but if your anything like me you'll play better on a 120hz panel with no lag what so ever.

This is my main setup, I've never been tempted with a triple display setup myself, I am tempted to swap that LG out

Hi what setup did you go for>?? Im looking into 3 Samsung S27A750D 27" at the min but not sure if its going to work with current gpu performance under eyefinity, as for 1 big screen or eyefinity 3 screens wins every time i have a projector and 52" tv but always go back to the 3 screen as you see so much more detail etc..

Being realistic, if you want 120hz, todays GPU's just arent going to power that on 3 screens.

Spreading over 3 screens is obviously going to require 3 times the GPU power of 1 screen. So by that logic to get 120fps over 3 screens you would need to be getting 360fps on 1 screen.

A powerful setup might get you there with something like TF2, but BF3? Not a chance in hell, or any other graphically demanding game.

Really I think its either an eyefinity setup, or a 120hz setup. No point spending extra cash on 120hz screens if their only gonna run at 40-60fps or so. So stick to standard 60hz if thats what you want.

Unless of course you want them for 3D rather than 2D 120hz smoothness. People run 3 screen setups with 3D vision, albeit on some beasty hardware.

3 x 120Hz screens seems a waste for nvidia surround unless you are going Tri-3D setup and personally i find 120Hz Monitors only slightly better then standard 60-75Hz Monitors but thats just me. Standard LED monitors are cheaper and you could put that cash into a better set up.
