Hi folks,

A question to those of you with SLI rigs out there.

First, the GPU's - I've got 2 GTX 480's running under water in SLI.

I'm probably going to be coming into a couple of monitors soon when work have a clear out, and was wondering whether I can use 3 monitors (2xDell 19" @ 1680x900 plus my existing iiyama 1920x1080).

I'd like to have monitors mounted either side of the iiyama to give me periphery vision in games, plus to extend my desktop.

Will this work? I'm not sure whether the 19" monitors are vga or DVI inputs...

Many thanks in advance.

Tatty

It won't be good - AFAIK it downscales to the highest common resolution that the monitors can support...

Yeah, I think this is correct, Ive read a lot the last few days as im delving into 3 screen eyefinity soon, it will downscale to whichever monitor has the lowest resolution.

Really? On my works laptop, that allows you to have 2 different resolutions - ie if you extend one desktop so that it spans two both retain their native resolutions, but that is an Intel set up. I was hoping to rotate the 2 monitors so that they were portrait and place them either side.

Can anyone confirm how this works, and what sort of issues I'm likely to come across?

Yeah dont take my word mate, get the real experts advice, sunday night so it might be slow, im sure you will get definitive answers tmrw. I thought eyefinity vis ATI cards it downscales to the smaller monitors native resolution. Like i said though, wait til tmrw for some others to see this.

You can have extended desktops using any variety of resolutions or refresh rates. But to actually game using Eyefinity/Surround the monitors must have the same resolution. Hence to make it work your 1080p monitor would have to downsize to whatever is the highest common resolution at which point it just becomes pointless as middle monitor will be non-native and look pixelated and out of sync with the rest of the image.

I googled it for you :)

Jesus loves you... :)

Thanks for the advice folks - I couldn't see it for looking. I didn't realise that it comes under the heading of 3d Surround, under the 2d heading. I'd looked there before posting my question, but missed that middle tab thinking that was only for 3d setups. DOH!

So it looks like I'm going to be taking delivery of 3 monitors for free that I can't use how I hoped. Ah well. I could switch over to the new monitors, but the lower res and bezels would drive me up the wall in Windows, so looks like I'll have to wait.... or sell them on to fund a bigger monitor :)

Thanks again everyone for the definitive help!
