So, I used to fold a year or so back but somehow managed to forget about it until now :(

I've not kept up on current folding rigs so I might be looking to put together maybe a single machine or a small farm that would be capable of 50k ppd (give or take a few!) - what would you recommend would be the best setup (trying to keep cost to a minimum of course :))

I have an air conditioned lab at work where I can host the pc/farm so keeping it cool/powered should not be a problem.

I've set up multiple GPUs before under XP so i'm not afraid to get my hands dirty in that respect but I must admit to have lost touch with GPU/motherboard combos for best PPD.

Of course, i'll be contributing to OcUKs stats once built :D

Cheers folks.

Just be a bit careful with the overclocking!

It's not nearly as bad as I thought. Follow Gibbo's advice and you're laughing. For 99% of people OCing the volts wont go anywhere near the dodgy side. Most people that I have seen can hit 4GHz+ almost at stock volts.

Depends how much you have to buy. Do you need a case, cooler, psu & gfx card? Or just the mobo/cpu/ram?

e.g. mobo/cpu/ram:
Intel Core i7-2600K 3.40GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor with FREE Lost Planet 2 PC Game - Retail £266.99
Gigabyte P67A-UD3 Intel P67 Chipset (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard - (Sandybridge) £99.98
Corsair XMS3 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (CMX4GX3M2A1600C9) £41.99
Sub Total : £340.80
Shipping:
VAT is being charged at 20.00% VAT : £68.16
Total : £408.96

But if you need case/cooler/psu/gfx/hdd as well its closer just over £600

Nah, just the bare essentials.

I've got spare cases/keyboards/mice/old hard drives coming out every cupboard in the house! I'd be looking to use onboard graphics if the mobo has it as well for the time being.

Would slapping in a nvidea card be suitable (I think I have a GTX260 somewhere) for this setup for extra ppd (maybe ~6k?) or would it be wasted as the CPU if fully loaded with its own work?

Cheers for the advice.

Edit: Nice daily avg there by the way Biffa - crikes what are you running? :D

P67 Sandybridge doesn't support onboard graphics, but P67 is the only chipset that overclocks (with the K) processors. So you need a cheap pci or pcie card.

I'm running an i7 920, i7 970 and Dual X5650 mainly, plus a couple of old Core2 Quads.
