F@H causes downloads to drop to <~1KB/s from >17Mbps

When start folding (SMP), and I have a few downloads running with a combined download rate of over 17Mbps, the rate drops suddenly to less than 1KB/s.

As soon as I stop the SMP service, everything shoots back up again to >17Mbps. Is this is a known issue?

My SMP runs at lowest priority, other processes are running at normal, but this problem still occurs.

any ideas??
thanks.

Yeah, I know whenever anything on the network is downloading / upload F@h units as everything else just slows to a crawl.

When FAH is uploading (which will happen at startup if a WU is waiting to be returned) then it will saturate the upload bandwidth and kill off your download speed with it. A solution is to use a 3rd party bandwidth limiting tool to specify what programs are allowed to upload/download at what speeds.

If this is happening all the time even if there is nothing left to send/receive then that's an odd one :o :p

say i am downloading some programmes from the iPlayer, before I start SMP the download rate is really really high >1400kB/s.

then i start the SMP and the download rate drops to ~1.2kB/s.

I then stop the SMP and the download rate rises again to the previous level.

Really strange...

I've had no issues running iPlayer on my Quad with SMP as well (though that was Linux SMP). I don't know if the Kontiki service does any checks to see if the system is idle, but if it does, that won't help. Also, SMP loads up the loopback interface (127.0.0.1) fairly heavily, but that shouldn't affect iPlayer, unless Kontiki isn't smart enough to realise that there's no point using that.

i am thinking the service must be scanning for idle conditions, cos I can watch Hi-def movies etc fine while the SMP is running.

Also it is worth mentioning that I tried to download some files from the internet ealier while the SMP client was running. The download rate was some 17Mbps, so it must be kservice.exe or khost.exe running strangely...
