Hi guys,

Just a quick query. Does F@H use your CPU for folding? I was pretty sure it did, but everyone in my office seems to think it's GPU only.

Also, if this is the case, do any DC projects use just CPU power?

Every DC project uses just CPU power except for Folding which uses CPU or GPU.

The majority of people folding use only their CPU so you're very welcome to join the team.

To settle the argument, does F@H use more GPU than CPU or more CPU than GPU?

Also, I'll definitely be starting back up on DC again soon :)

There are both CPU clients (that use exclusively cpu time), and there are GPU clients available for compatible graphics cards. Of course, the gpu client does need a degree of cpu time to feed data. Nvidia cards are currently the projects biggest producer (i think...), followed by the PS3 and CPUs, although this was from some time ago.

There are three F@H clients

Standard - uses any single cpu core to produce results for one WU
(duel or HT cpu can run two standard client at same time - quads can run four)

SMP - uses upto 4 cpu cores to produce results for one WU
(can be run on any cpu, but only duel and quad core will meet short deadlines)

GPU - uses one NEW gpu core and 'some' of the cpu to produce results for one WU
(only DX10 cards can be used)

So in answer to your question it's neither.
The first two clients use only the cpu
The third under XP will use 100% GPU and 1core of the CPU.
Under Vista it's 100% GPU and 5-6% of one core.

A high spec system can run both the SMP and GPU clients at the same time especially if running vista.

You can also run F@H on a PS3
