11/6/2006 SMP client now beta testing
We are now testing the SMP client with Folding@Home beta testers (beta testers can find more information in the beta testing forum). The SMP client supports OSX/Intel natively (which means a major points boost for OSX donors) as well as 64-bit linux (with 32-bit linux hopefully to come soon). Windows support will come much later, as this is a very different architecture for porting than OSX & Linux.

linky here

If you want to know more and may be in a position to try this out then this may be your chance to gain access to the beta team.

Im really looking forward to the OSX-Intel client, i hate having to switch the Macpro over to WinXP to set it folding, but im too lazy to bother signing up for the Betateam... suppose ill just wait until the client gets rolled out properly.

Apparently it prefers Mac Pros right now, but they're working on it.

When they're done, my Mac Mini will be going back to OSX for a while. I'll have to offload the Windows stuff I've dumped on it in the meanwhile, but that'll take no more than a day or two anyway.

Oh, and I got my FCF account back.

Right, I've got the client loaded and running on my laptop. According to stanford, the beta is designed primarily for quad core systems, but it is running just fine on my dual core. There are a few issues with the beta, but nothing major.

It's racing through the first WU too ... hope it gives a nice ppd.

What programs do people use to monitor their clients on macs?

Getting my laptop pretty hot though - 83C on both cores. I have little experience of a) macs, b) laptops and c) intel chips, but this seems a little toasty to me (!), should I stop it until a client comes out that allows control of the CPU usage?

That should do just fine.

Mr. Other, though that is quite toasty Apple is well known for laughing off the thermal specifications of their chip manufacturers. I suppose since it's taking care of its own thermal management and it's under warranty there's no harm in it. It's running as it is programmed to do so.

I doubt that they'll insert CPU percentage control for Mac/Linux clients any time soon.

Currently folding on all 4 cores, it looks like its going to take about 24hours to finish this 1 WU... going off the first few frames anyway 1.5mins each(500/500000). Any way of knowing what the current WU is? ive got 2604 and there doesnt seem to be any info about it on the the stats site.

Aye, im hoping for good things, under XP i was getting between 150PPD/core on most WUs and 450PPD/core on 600pointers. So hopefully 300PPD/core is pretty damn good if this is an average SMP WU. Im 1/40th of the way thru now and still on target to finish it within 24hour.
