Just a quickie as Iknow most of you guys are running SMP.
Is there anyway to congifure the proxy settings so it can reach the interwebs. As I'm stuck as 'install.bat' MPI settings bit.

Attempt 2:
Stopping MPICH2 Process Manager, Argonne National Lab.
MPICH2 Process Manager, Argonne National Lab stopped.
MPICH2 Process Manager, Argonne National Lab removed.
MPICH2 Process Manager, Argonne National Lab installed.
account (domain\user) [XXX\XXXXXXXXX]: XXXXXXXXX
password:
confirm password:
Password encrypted into the Registry.
Credentials for XXXXXXXXX rejected connecting to XXXXXXX-XX.XXX.internal
Aborting: Unable to connect to XXXXXXX-XX.XXX.internal
Press any key to continue . . .

Thanks,

We use a proxy server here at work - to cut a long story short don't keep any active files on it.

stop client (Ctrl+C)
make sure smpd.exe has closed
if not wait 2-3minutes.
If still not then use task manager to 'end task' three times
Set up shortcut to Fah.exe.
right click shortcut, click properties
add ' -configonly' to end of target.
apply and close
double click shortcut
when asked say NO to IE setting and NO to proxy.
Have all your smp files on client machine.

Just had a winSMP die on be after an upload - reinstalled as above and working fine

ah thanks, was thinking bout the -config line earlier, been crazy busy at work, will give it a go tomorrow if get time.

thanks again =)

Email this to myself just before leaving work and cant remember the site its off....

Windows SMP as a service:

1. Required component for XP & 2000 (not Vista, as it is built in): The Windows SMP client requires the Microsoft .NET framework v2.0; please install this prior to installing the client. The version 2.0 framework is required; it can co-exist with other versions, but this version must be installed. It can be obtained from Microsoft at the following URL: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en. Administrator privileges are required for install.

2. Unpack files. Run the self-extracting installer to unpack the SMP client files.

3. Client installation. You must have an account that has Admin rights on the PC and has a password before you proceed with the next portion of the install. Navigate to C:Program FilesFolding@Home Windows SMP Client V1.01. Run install.bat from within the SMP install directory to complete the installation. This will install MPI services that the client needs. If you have Windows Firewall enabled, you may get a pop-up window asking if you should give access to the smpd and mpiexec programs. Grant access. If you use an alternate firewall product, you will likely have to make a similar exception for smpd.

**NOTE** The username and password you provide for mpiexec should be your Windows login that you will run the client under. This is used for authentication on your local machine. It is cached in encrypted form in your Registry and is not transmitted to FAH servers.

At the end of the install process, you should see two lines of output:

If you see this twice, MPI is working
If you see this twice, MPI is working

If you do not see these lines, do not start the client. MPI is not successfully installed, and the client will not run successfully.

4. In a command prompt, navigate to the directory you installed the client to. By default, this is “C:Program FilesFolding@Home Windows SMP Client V1.01”. From there, run “fah –configonly”

5. Configure as usual, make sure you say “yes” to “Install as a service.” I recommend also saying “yes” to “Allow large work units,” however, this will let the client use more memory and potentially slow down the system it is on. On public systems, this should probably be left off.

6. Don’t start the service yet. Go to the Services management console (Start->Settings->Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Services) and look for the service that starts with FAH. Open the properties for that service and go to the Log On tab. In this tab, check “This account” instead of the default “Local System account” option and fill in the account you used to install the client. The account used to install the client must have administrative privileges for this step to work.

7. This step is optional, but recommended for the SMP client. Enter the registry editor (Start->Run->regedit.exe) to edit the registry entry for the FAH service. The default location for this is HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServic esFAH@C:+Program Files+Folding@Home Windows SMP Client V1.01+fah. If you installed in a place other than the default, the key name will be different, but it will still be in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServic es and will still start with FAH@. Select this key and edit the ImagePath key and append “ –forceasm” to the “Value data” field.

8. Close the registry editor and reboot. Trying to start the service without rebooting will not work, you must reboot.

As SMP requires a windows login, and many of us just use an Admin account at home, I found I had to password the onyl account on my pc, which ment having to type a flepping password everytime I started windows. Below is how I found to auto login whilst using a password so the SMP still works. (To all of you IT fellas here, this is likely to be common knowledge or theres probably an easier way, but for Joe User who reads these forums, hopefully it'll make getting SMP up and running easier)

Anyone who doesnt want to have to enter a password everytime Vista starts try this:

1, Goto Start Menu>Control Panel>User Accounts and assign a password to your account.
2, Once done open up the Start Menu again
3, Type netplwiz in the search box at the bottom of the start menu. (Less the quotes)
4, In the User Accounts window that pops up highlight your user name.
5, Untick the box for "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer" and click apply.
6, In the pop up window now enter the password you used in Step 1, hit ok, then ok to close the User Accounts window.
7, Reboot your system and you'll log into your account automatically even though its password protected.

[EDIT]
gonna be tuff to make the deadlines though, may be some 24hr folding here =( me thinks time for Quad n new toys soon
